“ Limitless Light ” is a collaborative album by composer/instrumentalist Hidekazu Wakabayashi and noise experimentalist, Lap Dancer. Their love for the study of spirituality and drive to explore new musical boundaries served as a major inspiration for this project. Even though stylistically, Wakabayashi and Lap Dancer seem to be at opposite ends of the musical spectrum (melodic ambience vs. harsh noise), these pieces document a unique convergence of melody and electronic experimentalism while, at the same time, serve as a launching pad for a new and innovative approach to the utilization of traditional instruments and their application to experimental music. The best way to describe the music is to liken it to the everyday experience of the remembrance of music. That is, as we remember a song, humming it and bringing it to our mind, we shape it to fit our own inner musical capabilities. We may hear the piano, but, in our mind, be experiencing (recalling it) in a different key, at a different tempo and/or seamlessly blending it with other songs that drift through our mind. Moreover, there is a dark beauty that emits from these pieces and an almost otherworldly presence as if one tuned in to satellite communications from extraterrestrials. Listened to intently, one may become aware of the hidden fragments that reappear, the mutated chord progressions that, while at once dominated a piece, have been subtly altered and drift around you quietly, haunting and entrancing you. And now, you find yourself walking through a field as a chilly autumnal wind cools your body. The sky has clouded over and you realize you are not alone, although there are no other people present. Your ears follow the sound of the wind. Where is it going? Where has it come from? This all seems so real, yet something here feels like a dream. It is time for you to close your eyes and embrace the limitless light. |
